thanks Cindy. I did not bring my camera when I went to the fair with the kids. Thus, I missed my annual state fair kid picture....last 3 or 4 years I took portraits of the 3 of them on the midway at dusk with all the lights behind them. These pictures here were shot on a day when I went back to the fair with Dennis just to take pictures for fun. That's a good way to do it, no kids to worry about!

Awesome pics, Amy! I didn't even bring my camera- we went on the day you pay $10 for unlimited rides, and that's what we did- ride rides all day. It was a blast, but I kind of wish I had some pictures!

I hate email, so you know you sparked my interest! First of all, PRINT COMPETITION IS NOT FOR SISSIES!. Your experience is not unique, we have all suffered through it. Do not give up, print competition is the greatest learning experience in the business. It is the journey that is important, not the success. (which will come) All is not lost , everybody needs display prints, hang them in a local restaurant, great advertising and a purpose. I have been entering for at least 25 years, and I am a much better photographer because of it. At our state last week I got an 95 on a classical portrait(probaly get a 79 at Southwest), two upper 80s on art prints, and 2 79's and a 77 on my three other clasical portraits. Were the judges right? in my opinion, yes. On your prints: clothing is holding you back. It is sad but true that there are competition clothes and your clients clothes. No matter how the great the portrait wrong clothes will kill it. Do not give up, your locations, bonding with your subjects, composition, use of color are great!

Hi Amy, I really appreciate you sharing your competition experiences, and are having courage to share your work, and let others comment on it.
It takes a photographer, who is willing to grow, to hear what others "think" about their interpretations of the images submitted.
This journey is sometimes sprinkled with unappropriate remarks, or comments, that sting us so badly, changing our attitudes about competition.....
I just wanted to give you a high five, for sharing here, you will grow from this experience.
Good Luck,
Carol
